The International Foundation was created in 1948. Like other early foundations, the International Foundation’s purpose was “to promote, foster, encourage and further non-profit, non-sectarian and non-political educational, medical, philanthropic, humanitarian, scientific and literary enterprises of all kinds.”
In its many years of grant making, the International Foundation has worked with thousands of US-based 501(c)3 organizations to bring knowledge, resources and compassion to individuals and communities around the world. In the mid-21st century, our strategic mission has evolved in concert with the exponential growth in the United States non-profit sector and rapid evolution of the discipline of international development.
At the core of our mission is the concept that charity alone isn’t enough. We must take charity to a level that delivers measurable and sustainable change that is “owned” by the project participants and that leaves broad, lasting benefits. We prioritize the principles of self-determination, local engagement, and sustainability, both as means to and ends of our philanthropic goals. More and more, this requires grant-maker and grantee to share a common view of the challenges, optimal solutions, and ultimate objectives of our partnering efforts.
Chao Foundation and T-Fish Fund’s priorities are aligned with Himalayan HealthCare’s. We serve women and children in health, education and income. We empower women and help them become leaders and role models, to be financially independent and to chart their own life beyond traditional roles and norms.
* Since our partnership we have supported girls and young women to become health providers in their own villages, to continue school and complete college education and vocational training. * We have provided critical obstetrical and gynecological intense training to thirty rural women health providers to become the primary care givers for tens of thousands of women in remote and isolated villages. Thus decreasing morbidity and mortality in women and improving teenage care. * Currently 2500 rural children in northern Dhading are being screened for malnutrition during this Covid pandemic and those less than five years old malnourished children identified will be provided with fortified and therapeutic foods and carefuly monitored to bring them back to good health. 2000 mothers of the 2500 screened children will be trained in diet, hygiene, clean water, sanitation and related issues.
Since 1948, Direct Relief has worked to help people who confront enormous hardship to improve the quality of their lives. The tradition of direct and targeted assistance, provided in a manner that respects and involves the people served, has been a hallmark of the organization since its founding. Caring for People from Day One In 1945, William Zimdin, an Estonian immigrant who had amassed significant wealth in prewar Europe, began sending thousands of relief parcels containing food, clothing, and medicines to relatives, friends, and former employees who were rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of World War II. He established the William Zimdin Foundation on August 23, 1948 as a California not-for-profit corporation. After Zimdin’s death in 1951, Dezso (Dennis) Karczag, a Hungarian immigrant and Zimdin’s close business associate, assumed management of the organization. In 1957, the organization changed its name to the Direct Relief Foundation, and in 1982, became Direct Relief International. Helping People Help Themselves Direct Relief provided postwar assistance to enable people to help themselves. In 1950, a revolving loan fund was established to provide refugees with small grants to establish new lives. Repaid funds provided capital for subsequent grantees. While the individual grant program ceased in the early 1960s, the underlying notion remains integral to current programs. Improving Health Around the World In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Direct Relief received many requests for assistance related to health issues beyond Europe. We decided that providing medical assistance to indigenous facilities would achieve the greatest overall impact. Direct Relief’s mission was refined to serve disadvantaged populations living in medically underserved communities throughout the world. In 1962, Direct Relief International became licensed as a wholesale pharmacy to secure prescription medicines for use abroad. This experience in handling pharmaceuticals led to the development of strict internal protocols regarding the suitability of types of products, inventory controls, and the qualifications of trained health professionals on the receiving end of aid shipments. This focus also established strong ties to U.S. healthcare companies, which have long supported our efforts with donations of high-value pharmaceutical and other medical resources allocated through our assistance program. There in Emergencies and for the Long Term Since its inception, Direct Relief has provided aid in response to emergencies and to refugee populations. Beginning with postwar refugee assistance in Eastern Europe and Greece, Direct Relief has also provided support for more than 40 years to Tibetan refugees and has consistently responded with targeted medical aid following major emergencies since the 1970 Peru earthquake. Today, Direct Relief provides appropriate and specifically requested medical resources to community-based institutions and organizations in 59 countries, including the United States. Since 2000, Direct Relief has provided more than $1 billion in direct aid through medical material assistance and targeted cash grants serving people in 70-plus countries worldwide.

GlobeMed is a network of university students that partner with grassroots organizations around the world to improve the health of people living in poverty. Through their involvement today, students commit to a life of leadership in global health and social justice.
Founded in 2009, GlobeMed at CU-Boulder is one of 46 GlobeMed chapters working to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world. GlobeMed at CU-Boulder partners with Himalyan HealthCare to improve the health and wellbeing of the people living in Jawalakhel, Nepal. Together, HHC and GlobeMed at CU-Boulder are improving access to high quality healthcare, health education, nutrition, hygiene, and economic empowerment. Over the past 10 years, GlobeMed at CU-Boulder has raised over $125,000 to support the work of HHC.

Caring for the World Films is an award-winning non-profit filmmaking company. CFTWF has distinguished itself as THE production company that non-profit organizations trust to tell their story. We search the planet for sustainable, relatively unknown international humanitarian organizations that have limited resources and have a compelling story to tell.
CFTWF’s mission is to provide non-profit humanitarian organizations with the tools that enable them to increase awareness for their cause, expand their volunteer base, improve their marketing efforts and ultimately raise the level of donations. We develop strong relationships with each charity by becoming personally involved in their efforts by participating as an active volunteer in the group
Friends of Nepal provides a framework and network for people who love and want to remain connected to Nepal and with each other, while continuing to promote Village Community Development efforts in concrete, right-sized, appropriate, and inclusive ways.
Most of our members are former Nepal Peace Corps Volunteers, former Peace Corps Nepal staff, foreigners who have spent considerable time in Nepal, or academics.
But anyone with an interest in being a friend to one of the most beautiful, diverse and welcoming countries in the world is welcome and encouraged to join!
